Shakespeare’s Sonnets: A Participatory Reading with Joel Altman

When: Tue., Sept. 17, 6-7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: free
Shakespeare’s sonnets are kind of like Top-40 radio, or football, or — bear with me — Keeping Up With the Kardashians: Even if you’ve never sat down and actually read one start to finish, they’ve so thoroughly permeated literature, and, indeed, all of pop culture, that you’ve no doubt absorbed many of them by osmosis, likely without even realizing it. So why not sit down and read a couple from start to finish? Join Shakespeare scholar Joel Altman at University Press Books (2430 Bancroft Way, Berkeley) for a participatory recitation of a carefully chosen selection of the Bard’s 154 sonnets that’s sure to go beyond the shall-I-compare-thee-to-a-summer’s-day low-hanging fruit — and most likely be at least as edifying as the Kardashians.
