Sapphire

When: Mon., June 25, 7-9 p.m. 2012

Precious has died, leaving her nine-year-old son Abdul to navigate a harrowing void. Sapphire and her novels do not deal in sweetness and light, as you know if you read the original book about Precious, Push, or saw the film. The Kid, Abdul, goes into foster care and then a Catholic school, where he's alternately a victim and predator, his mind and his fantasies often merging into one dreamlike narrative. Happy endings are not guaranteed. Sapphire reads at Books Inc. Alameda (1344 Park St.) on Monday, June 25. 7 p.m., free. 510-522-2226 or BooksInc.net
