The dramatized story of Formula 1 racing drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and their fierce rivalry on the world’s road-racing courses in the 1970s has everything going for it: vividly drawn characters, bright dialogue (by screenwriter Peter Morgan), suitably thrilling racing action, and smart acting by Hemsworth (as British playboy jock Hunt) and Brühl (hot-tempered Austrian Lauda, a technician in the fast lane). Best of all, Rush reminds us why we liked director Ron Howard in the first place, as he revisits the car-chase capers of his early Roger Corman days (Grand Theft Auto) with all the perspective – and the budget – that fifty years in the business can bring to an already sexy portrait of the Me Decade sporting scene. Terrific supporting cast, too: Olivia Wilde, Christian McKay, Alexandra Maria Lara, and Pierfrancesco Favino. A winner all the way (123 min.).
