At most Thai restaurants, non-Thai diners are pretty much limited to dishes that have been muffled or otherwise dumbed down, but at this takeout food shop in the Pacific East Mall. Bangkok-born owner Salalinee Ekchit is cooking primarily for an Asian clientele, meaning that her heat-at-home curries, green papaya salad, five-spice pork hock, and sticky-rice sweets present flavors more vivid, funkier, less sugary, and spicier than you find with most American Thai food. Oh, and many of the ingredients Ekchit uses are organic, making Ran Kanom practically unique. Don’t miss the jars of Ekchit’s hand-pounded red curry paste and nam prik, including one flavored with mangda, a type of cockroach.
