While trainspotters anxiously anticipate upcoming major label releases by Mistah F.A.B. and the Federation, Da Bidness coolly slides in the back door, swaggers up to the bar, and orders a double shot of Patron. This ambitious indie release represents an all-star collab on a couple of different levels it's a joint venture between SMC and Thizz Ent., featuring Yay Area bosses from Vallejo (PSD), Oakland (Keak), and Frisco (Messy). With tracks by Rick Rock, Droop-E, and Traxamillion, and cameos by F.A.B., Dubee, J. Stalin, Turf Talk, E-40, and the late Mac Dre, Da Bidness overflows with Bayness. As expected, Keak and Messy bring their gritty, gutter-mouthed flows, yet it's the slept-on PSD who's the real star of the show, alternating between issuing pimpish sixteen-bar statements and singing smoove-ass melodic hooks. Although Da Bidness revisits some familiar territory ("Yee!!!!," "Hoes"), it's less contrived and more soulful than you'd imagine, and its most fervent moments ("Cus, Cus," "Gumbo Pot," "Cool Nigga") don't fit the hyphy template so much as expand its parameters. If this album's any indication of the subgenre's staying power, it's safe to say the wheels ain't fallen off yet.
