Steve Butler (Matt Damon) and Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), acquisition agents for a natural gas company, visit an economically depressed rural Pennsylvania community to convince the locals to lease their land for fracking — quick money in exchange for wrecking the landscape. But the job takes its toll, in this standard-brand character study with environmental overtones directed by Gus Van Sant. The screenplay — by Damon and John Krasinski (who costars as an enviro activist), from a story by Dave Eggers – seems to be trying for the same overall tone as Up in the Air but falls miles short, maybe because director Van Sant’s heart doesn’t appear to be quite in it. Smells more like an assignment than a Van Sant personal project à la Milk or Paranoid Park. Costarring Hal Holbrook and Ken Strunk. (106 min.)
