Pretty Lights, aka Derek Vincent Smith, knows how to throw a party. That statement shouldn’t come as much of a surprise: After all, the dude had the audacity to name himself pretty lights. The good news is, he lives up to his moniker. “Pretty lights!” is exactly what you’ll be thinking if you see his wild, captivating light show at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (99 Grove St., San Francisco) this weekend. Smith was one of the first electronic musicians to make heavy use of hip-hop beats. In doing so, he ushered in a new wave of electronic hip-hop hybrid acts, like Big Gigantic and Griz. His music, which employs a lot of classic soul samples, is unhurried, atmospheric, heady, and feel-good. Support for Friday night’s show will come from Tycho, The Grouch and Eligh, and Odesza; on Saturday night, catch Tipper, Anna Sia, and Paul Basic.
