Potala Organic Cafe disproves commonly held beliefs about the flavorlessness of macrobiotic food. Chef Tenzin, a fifteen-year veteran of Shangri-La Cafe in North Oakland (formerly Manzanita and Organic Cafe) is co-owner, and he’s branching out from the stripped-down cuisine of his past. Everything is organic and vegan, and besides a few potato and beet digressions, also largely macrobiotic. More importantly, the food has flavor, with seasonings like basil, ginger, and garlic making the healthful fare more user-friendly for the uninitiated. Similar to Shangri-La, the rotating daily menu is an affordable prix fixe, with a balanced range of grains, soups, desserts, salads, and cooked veggies in each meal.
