Long a Berkeley institution and acute 60s counterculture symbol, this oft-controversial patch of grass off Telegraph Avenue now mostly houses homeless vagrants, crusty anarchist vegans, pickup basketball players, and UCB students caught between classes. But its also the site of frequent free concerts and political rallies, usually featuring local bands ranging from activist folk to ethnic funk. The spirit of free love is alive and well here: During a recent soiree, a young punky couple quietly (and openly) engaged in coital bliss, completely oblivious to the world around them. Ah, freedom.
