Oakland’s marquee drive-in offers a snapshot of the city’s fortunes over the past six decades, from googie destination diner in the Fifties to sketchy grease merchant in the new millennium. The place sat empty for the better part of a decade, until Somerset’s Gary Rizzo oversaw a gut rehab, updating drive-in classics (the burger has aioli and a house-baked focaccia bun) and adding items like Cal-cuisine pizzas and rotisserie chicken to make a play for Piedmont moms.
