Oddly exhilarating but basically uninteresting, unless you live and breathe for giant-monster death struggles. Guillermo del Toro’s big-buck sci-fi spectacle amounts to more than ninety minutes (out of 131) of battles between huge robots — with pilots Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi at the controls inside — and gnarly deep-sea critters bent on taking over the Earth. It’s an advance in computer-generated effects and sound engineering, with routine military characterization and homages (Top Gun, Blade Runner, Aliens, etc.) sandwiched in. Prepare to have your eyes popped and your ears split. Meanwhile, we sit contemplating del Toro’s gothic early films, like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone, and Cronos — all of them mysterious and unforgettable where this whopper is obvious and dispensable. But that’s showbiz. Costarring Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman as Hannibal Chau. Screenplay by del Toro and Travis Beacham. (131 min.)
