Interesting actors but the movie has problems. In the heart of decaying, drug-ridden, Great Recession Rust Belt America, a perturbed ex-con steel worker (Christian Bale) and his flaky Iraq vet brother (Casey Affleck) have trouble with a vicious thug (Woody Harrelson, at full lather) over bare-knuckles prize fights. But that’s nothing compared to their troubles with the screenplay. You can see every single plot turn coming at least thirty minutes ahead, and the dialogue would have been hoary in 1932. Director and co-screenwriter Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart
) doesn’t know when to end a scene, either. Also in the all-gruesome cast: Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, Zoë Saldana, and Sam Shepard (116 min.).

More corrosion in the Rust Belt.
