Mildred Pierce A nasty bit of melodrama centered on the efforts of one woman (Joan Crawford) to make a better life for herself by starting a restaurant that becomes quite successful — efforts that, finally, blind her to the creeps who are her lover and daughter (the daughter is a monster worthy of Douglas Sirk). Especially outstanding is the somber night photography (109 min., 1945). — M.C. (EC, 6:00)
