There arent many other restaurants in Alameda that better qualify as institutions. Take a trip to Oles (since 1926, the menu proclaims) for good old-fashioned diner food that hasnt been touched by any of Alice Waters gourmetifying minions. As youd expect from the name, the specialty here is waffles, light, perfectly formed squares that take to syrup and fruit like baked to beans. Youll probably see half your neighborhood here on a Saturday morning, which makes Oles either annoying or charming, depending on how hungry you are.
