Oakland Capture the Flag

When: Thu., Aug. 21, 7:30-10 p.m. 2014
Price: Free
There’s something empowering about disrupting the social order of a city by turning it into your personal playground. It’s a way of reclaiming space, and reorienting your relationships with the other people in it — that, and it’s fun. Sam Mende-Wong is interested in all of these outcomes. For about five years, he organized a weekly four square meet-up (the game, not the app) in the Rockridge BART parking lot, and now he has moved on to Capture the Flag. Folks over at Oaklandish used to organize games of CTF in Frank Ogawa Plaza, but the gatherings died down when Occupy Oakland took over the space. This summer, Mende-Wong has had success getting them going again, and the last meet-up of the summer will be taking place on Thursday. Participation is free, and everyone is welcome. For Mende-Wong, who grew up in Oakland, inclusivity is at the core of the event. Recognizing that many East Bay communities have recently been experiencing increased marginalization, he finds it important to have a gathering where different types of people can come together as a larger community and have fun for free. “[Oakland is] a nexus of cultures — radical thinkers, creative types, blue collar workers. All that comes together in this amazing mesh and I think that’s really important to be represented in the games that we play.”
