For nearly a decade now, the organizers of Non Stop Bhangra have been putting on wild, colorful, heart-pounding dance parties that feature traditional Punjabi folk music and dance (aka bhangra), as well as some hip-hop, reggae, and electronica. This Saturday at Public Works (161 Erie St., San Francisco), the group will ring in the New Year with a party dedicated to Lohri, the Punjabi celebration of the winter solstice. As usual, the night will open with a dance lesson and performance by Dholrhythms Dance Company. Then, starting at 10:30 p.m., Non Stop Bhangra DJ Jimmy Love will be joined by special guests DJ Sep and DJ Nix. Throughout the night, two live drummers will bang out the rhythms of bhangra on the dhol, while DJ Amar will create live visuals. If you haven’t checked out a Non Stop Bhangra party yet, here’s your chance to sweat off the passing of dark days.
