It's spring again ... and records are in the air. Lots of quality material from local acts for you to pick up. DJ dream team Triple Threat (Apollo, Shortkut, Vinroc) just released its debut album as a group, Many Styles, featuring the likes of Bay Area reps Goapele, Souls of Mischief, Mystic, and Zion I -- which also has a new one out, the much-anticipated sophomore LP Deep Water Slang Version 2.0. Also be sure to check for Souled Separately from Oakland's own Feenom Circle, a dope three-man crew on the come-up, rocking smart lyrics and mellow, jazz-heavy beats.
The ever-busy KutMasta Kurt just released a pair of fresh singles on his Threshold Records label, "Golden Age" b/w "African Style" with Planet Asia, and a new Dopestyle 1231 joint called "Size Double D" featuring Hiero kingpin Del. High-octane B-boys Prozack, Mark Stretch, and DJ Design, collectively known as Foreign Legion, are about to drop their second album, Playtight, which is guaranteed to bump. On the rediscovered classics tip, definitely seek out Dooley-O's Watch My Moves 1990, an absurdly funky, long-lost gem finally seeing the light of day on Solid Records.
Another golden age veteran is back on the move: the legendary D.O.C. More than a dozen years since his untouchable, aptly titled solo debut No One Can Do It Better, the D.O.C. drops Deuce, an impressive compilation-style piece loaded with cameos from Dre, Cube, Snoop, Nate Dogg, 6Two, and more.
Instrumental heads should be on the lookout for the new J. Rawls record, History's Greatest Battles, Campaigns and Topics, out now on Female Fun Music. He's one-half of the group Lone Catalysts, and has laced beats for Black Star, J-Live, and Hobo Junction, among others. Also, get hip to DaybyDay Entertainment, which has released two excellent albums already this year: Lightheaded's Pure Thoughts and Cadence's Poisons the Mind of Children.
