Columbus, Ohio is home to Ohio State University, one of the largest gay populations in the country, and, perhaps lesser known, a thriving DIY punk scene. Nervosas is one of the more notable bands to emerge from the Midwest college town as of late. Formed in 2011 by guitarist/vocalist Mickey Marie and bassist/vocalist Jeff Kleinman, the trio (which also includes drummer Nick Schuld) plays a blistering form of post-punk with all the feverishness that its name implies. It’s no act. In an interview with the Moscow-based blog Behind Punk, Marie said she was suffering from severe anxiety, depression, and other health ailments, including a damaged voice (from over-singing in her prior band, New Creases), when she and Kleinman, who had just begun dating, started playing music together. “All of his bass lines made my weird guitar noodlings make sense,” she said. “He helped me channel my despair.” The band is currently on a month-long tour that includes several dates in the Bay Area, including Thursday at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records (420 40th St., #5, Oakland) and Sunday at the Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St., San Francisco).
