Neil J. Smelser : "Higher Education: The Play of Continuity and Crisis"

When: Tuesdays, 4-5:30 p.m. Continues through Feb. 7 2012
Phone: 510-642-5040

Given current events, this year's topic for the annual Clark Kerr lecture series -- which aims to examine and elucidate the role of higher education in American society at large -- feels particularly salient. In a talk entitled "The Play of Continuity and Crisis," famed sociologist and longtime Cal professor Neil Smelser discusses the role of social movements in the realm of higher education (and vice-versa). Fittingly enough, the talk, which repeats on Tuesday, Jan. 31, and again on Saturday, Feb. 4, takes place at the Berkeley Art Museum (2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley) -- mere yards away from Sproul Plaza, the epicenter of the Free Speech and Occupy Cal movements. 4 p.m., free.
