Nederlands Dans Theater

When: Wed., Oct. 23, 8 p.m. and Thu., Oct. 24, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: Tickets start at $30
Cal Performances has set a high bar for the dance season by opening with Nederlands Dans Theater, one of the world’s premier contemporary companies. For more than thirty years its name was nearly synonymous with that of former artistic director Jiri Kylian, who both defined the Dutch company and redefined dance with genre-defying, abstract, and sometimes deeply personal choreography. Paul Lightfoot is now at the helm, with his longtime choreographic partner and fellow former NDT dancer (and former wife) Sol León as artistic adviser, and next week at Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way below Telegraph Ave., Berkeley), the company’s peerless dancers will perform two of their many co-creations: Sehnsucht, danced partially in a revolving box and entirely to Beethoven, and Schmetterling, with solos, duets, and ensemble segments layered over music by composer Max Richter and singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields. An artist talk precedes Thursday’s show, at 7 p.m.; free to ticketholders.
