The Inedit label is one of the most uncompromising, applying itself to the almost limitless field of world music. And while some Inedit titles are demanding, most are simply excellent. Syrian oud master Muhammad Qadri Dalal's Unwonted Maqamat is both. The intriguing title could perhaps be translated as "Unusual Modes" -- a maqam is one of the 117 untempered Arabic scales. Most Arabic musicians might use a dozen or so of these; Dalal can work in most of them, and even throws in a track where he moves freely from one mode to another. This gutsy but melodic disc is strongly recommended to students of improvisation and/or Middle Eastern music.
