Muck-Rakingest Youth Radio Show
Youth Radio on KPFA 94.1 FM
Heard Saturdays at 10 a.m., the hour-long Youth Radio show broadcasts the results of a hands-on training program for budding journalists. Founded by Ellen O'Leary, the program has already turned out the next generation of radio talent now working at public and commercial radio stations. The idea is to empower teens by giving them skills to express their opinions via produced stories and commentaries, in which they take on parents, dating, health, politics, the sag, and other topics, with a seldom-heard viewpoint. Since 1992, Youth Radio has bagged many prestigious journalism awards, and its features and programs are aired on commercial and noncommercial stations across the country. But perhaps what gives Youth Radio its East Bay stamp and deeper meaning is the unity it creates amongst communities here by using a diverse cast of male and female voices to help break down division and misunderstanding.
