Golden West Sign Arts

There’s something very endearing about hand-painted signs: the careful and colorful brushstrokes so clearly put into each letter and character; the slight, human imperfections that make each one so unique; and the fact that they’re one of the few things left in this world that weren’t done using a computer. Unabashed Luddites rejoice: Golden West Sign Arts is reviving the art of traditional hand-painted signage throughout the East Bay and beyond with its affordable, original sign-painting, restoration jobs, and signature gold-leaf work. Take a look around and you’ll see that the small but stalwart company is being increasingly called upon by local businesses to paint everything from sidewalk signs and menu boards to lettering on trucks and boats. From the window of Sacred Rose Tattoo in Berkeley to the door of Cassave Restaurant in Oakland, it’s clear that while computer-generated signage certainly dominates our visual landscape, there’s still love out there for something rendered by hand.
