Is a dog's life really so bad? Not in Emeryville. Founded in 1997 by Lauren Westreich, a Brown University alum, Every Dog Has Its Day Care takes the private-school approach to nurturing a pampered pooch. Prospective dogs and their owners must go through an interview before they are admitted. Most pass, and once in they are offered exclusive membership with guaranteed access to all services. Every Dog's 14,000-square-foot facility boasts a spa, a splash pool, a kitchen where meals are personally prepared, and a doggie hotel for overnight guests. Supervised group play and confidence-building games teach mankind's best friends to get along. "Dogs are an incredible part of people's lives, but many of our clients are so busy they can't provide all of the care," Westreich says. "We meet the needs of the dogs so that they can be a successful part of society. We know all our dogs. Some of them have been with us for six and a half years. ... This is not home, but we try to create a second home for them."
