Sure, Feelmore's got all your average (and not-so-average) adult needs on lock. But as the motto "it's more than just sex" indicates, Feelmore's owner — adult filmmaker, sex educator, and tech-world refugee Nenna Joiner — has taken it upon herself to create something that's much more than your standard-issue sex shop. That means hosting regular educational and social events; supporting the local arts and sexual-health communities through various partnerships; stocking queer-, trans-, and feminist-friendly toys, films, and literature; making a concerted effort to target people of color (a demographic long overlooked in the adult industry); and, most importantly, by being positive, supportive, honest, and open about the East Bay's collective sex life. Even the shop's physical space reflects that: It's in the middle of the thriving Uptown district, for one, surrounded by bars, and instead of opting for the shamefully papered-up windows of so many other adult stores, it's got classy window displays, late hours, and perpetually open doors. This is a sex shop that's proudly in and of the community, rather than hiding itself from it. And that's revolutionary.
