.Most Balanced Kid’s Meal

Yoshi's Oakland

Yoshi’s Japanese restaurant in Jack London Square battles the notion that an upscale restaurant can’t be kid-friendly. Its current $10 child’s plate includes miso soup, veggie tempura, rice, soba noodles, and organic teriyaki chicken, all presented neatly in a bento box — making it the prettiest and healthiest kids’ meal this side of the bay. It’s more costly than a Happy Meal, but it’s not your typical grilled cheese, hamburger, or pasta kids’ meal either. The black-and-white hand-drawn, photocopied “healthy kids” menu by Chef Shotaro Kamio adds to the charm. Select kids’ Sunday matinee shows at a heavily discounted price make the renowned jazz club and restaurant even more kid-friendly. Chef Kamio has turned around the kitchen in the last few years, adding a modern twist to traditional Japanese cuisine. So on the rare occasion that you bring your child to a nice restaurant, you can sit back while you nosh on sashimi, seared kobe beef, and fried baby calamari — because you’ll know your kid is eating well, too.
