Remember the tribal armband? Heh. These days, even Bud Light commercials rake on the idea of dumb tattoos. But fine art never goes out of style. For seven years, Freddy Corbin has owned and operated Temple Tattoo in downtown Oakland. He specializes in epic, religious works -- think a man's back turned into a canvas for Christ's face, droopy eyes looking heavenward, his crown of thorns cutting into his brow while thick drops of blood stream down his face like tears. Also consider the Virgin de Guadalupe the length of a forearm, yellow rays of light exploding behind her while she prays silently. While Corbin is the Man at Temple, his shop -- which has the quaint feel of an Italian cappella, what with the votives at the altar -- has employed some of the Bay Area's finest ink disciples. At Temple, there's something worth worshipping.
