The Bay Area suffers no dearth of noise pop outfits, fortunately. The swirling, shoegazey, psychedelic Moonbeams sounds like the result of musicians who holed up in an attic and listened to Psychocandy and Loveless until their hearts became tender, pulpy messes (in a good way). The San Francisco-based band embraces forlorn and delicate melodies all but drowned in down-tuned, distorted guitars; slow, snare-heavy percussion; and foggy vocals that recall The Jesus and Mary Chain's Jim Reid. The point is, regardless of the many comparisons it inspires, Moonbeams makes beautiful music that effectively distills its many influences and predecessors. But more importantly, Moonbeams has tapped the vein of deep emotion that spills into every chord and riff -- and that is what truly sets it apart from its peers. Moonbeams performs with Slowness and The Tennis System at Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St., San Francisco) on Friday, Jan. 11. 8:30 p.m., $7.
