Grab the BlueJean Bop Festival and Classic Car Show festival by the roots.

Tanoa Stewart really digs roots music -- the original stuff, a half dozen streams meandering toward each other in a pre-hippie universe. He loves it so much, he books it for a living, securing gigs for Bay Area bands Stompy Jones and Johnny Dilks & his Visitacion Valley Boys; so much so he was moved, with partner Johnny Lee, to bring those two acts together with two other powerhouse outfits for the first-ever BlueJean Bop Festival and Classic Car Show, this Sunday in Fremont. "I always wanted to do a show that had the two different sides of roots music, kind of showing how classic country and western influenced rhythm and blues and jazz, and vice versa," he says. "And then of course, how it came together, and Elvis made up rockabilly."

The day starts at noon outside the Saddle Rack, 42011 Boscell Rd., with the car exhibition, food, drinks, and other vendors, and rhythm & blues/jazz by Stompy Jones, honky-tonkin' country by Johnny Dilks, rockabilly by Deke Dickerson & the Ecco-Fonics, and doo-wop and rhythm & blues by Big Sandy & the Lonely Blue Boys, aka the fellas who handle background vocals on many of Big Sandy's records with his Fly-Rite Boys. Then, the whole caboodle moves inside for second sets by all the bands, more food and vendors, three bars, mechanical-bull riding, dancing on the hardwood dancefloor and, since this is music from a time when men were men and women were glad of it, a Ride 'Em Cowgirl Pinup Contest, judged by the four bandleaders. The nighttime party, from 6 p.m. to midnight, is a 21-and-up affair, but "we're very excited that the outside can be all-ages," Stewart says, "because rarely do these bands get to play all-ages shows. They're always playing in clubs."

Tickets to the festival are priced as such: $20 for everything, $15 with preregistered classic car; $10 under 21 for the outdoor bash; free for kids 5 and younger. A portion of the proceeds benefits Girls Incorporated of Alameda County. For more info: BlueJeanBop.com or 415-505-8530.
