.Mental Illness Happy Hour Live

At The New Parkway

First things first: Please know that the Express is presenting this event. But, you should also know that we wouldn’t sponsor an event that we don’t actually like. Mental Illness Happy Hour is a weekly podcast hosted by comedian Paul Gilmartin featuring content specifically geared toward people dealing with depression, addiction, or other psychological challenges. Through an online forum (on MentalPod.com) and relatable interviews on the show, Gilmartin aims to create a sense of community for his intended audience — or at least help them to feel that they are not alone. That’s all Gilmartin, but the Express’ part is in presenting two live tapings of his show at The New Parkway (474 24th St., Oakland) on Wednesday, July 20 and Thursday, July 21 (6–9 p.m.). The theme will be “raised in a cult.” Wednesday will feature Glynn Washington, host of NPR’s Snap Judgment, whose parents were part of an intense church founded by an apocalyptic radio evangelist. Thursday will be Jamie DeWolf, the host of Tourettes Without Regrets, who is the great-grandson of L. Ron Hubbard, who founded the church of Scientology. Last time, the shows completely sold out. Just saying.
