The UC Berkeley campus has hosted its share of protests, so it's an apt setting for the world premiere of Mark Morris Dance Company's version of The Rite of Spring -- the original was greeted by heated words, projectiles, and mayhem on its 1913 Paris premiere. (No one seems to remember whether Vaslav Nijinsky's anti-classical choreography or Igor Stravinsky's explosive score incited more outrage.) The centenary has inspired many tributes to the original, which was revolutionary in both movement and music; Morris, equally versed in both arts, seems especially well suited to taking it on. Cal Performances has the honor of presenting his reimagined Rite during the Ojai North! Festival (Morris is musical director this year) in Hertz Hall (Bancroft Way at College Ave., Berkeley), with jazz trio The Bad Plus playing its interpretation of the score. The program also includes Morris's 1993 Mosaic and United.
