Maria Semple

When: Wed., April 24, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: free

Bernadette Fox is lost. After a mysterious tragedy, she and her husband leave Los Angeles and move to Seattle, where he has just landed a prestigious job as a guru at Microsoft -- a culture Bernadette soon learns she despises. Then, unannounced, she runs away. Author Maria Semple (formerly a TV writer for comedies like Arrested Development and Mad About You) cobbles together Bernadette's story through emails, psychiatric evaluations, and notes from her daughter, telling a darkly comedic tale about the disintegration of an upper middle-class family and slowly revealing the tragedy that triggered it all. On Wednesday, Apr. 24, join Semple at Mrs. Dalloway's (2904 College Ave., Berkeley), where she'll read from her novel, Where'd You Go Bernadette? 7:30 p.m., free.
