Outrageously entertaining actioner by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis functions equally well as a rowdy political satire. Renegade Mexican cop Machete (action stalwart Danny Trejo) comes to Texas and lands in the middle of violent anti-immigrant hysteria involving a cynical politician (Robert De Niro), a right-wing billionaire (Don Johnson), a Mexican drug lord (Steven Seagal), and an ICE agent (Jessica Alba) with doubts about her mission. The two directors slam ‘em around hard in knockout mock-Seventies style, with maximum blood ‘n’ guts and a full cast of hilarious secondary characters: Jeff Fahey as a scheming pol, Michelle Rodriguez as a sympathetic taco-truck owner, Cheech Marin as a fighting priest, and Lindsay Lohan as Fahey’s slutty daughter. Machete
cuts through everything. Faster thrills and bigger laughs than any three ordinary “action” movies. Written by Robert Rodriguez and Álvaro Rodríguez (no relation) (105 min).
