Anytime a Mac Dre song plays in the club (which, in Oakland, happens every week), the dance floor goes extra crazy without fail. That’s because Mac Dre was not only the godfather of the hyphy movement and a pivotal figure in West Coast hip-hop — he was also a key purveyor of the free-spirited, DIY ethos that makes the Bay Area so unique. Mac Dre was an inspiration to several generations of rappers, some of whom will gather at The Regency Ballroom to pay homage on July 5, his birthday. (He was a cancer if you care about that sort of thing.) Mistah F.A.B., Kool John, Baby Bash, Mac Mall, J Diggs, DJ Amen, and DJ Shabazz, plus a special guest, will be there to celebrate and do the thizzle dance.
