The Morrison Library on UC Berkeley’s campus (101 Doe Library) is one of those out-of-a-movie dream spots. Leather-bound books line the walls, chandeliers hang from the elaborately patterned ceilings, Persian rugs carpet the floors, and heavy upholstered armchairs sit among carved busts and painted portraits. It’s the ideal space to cozy up with UC Berkeley faculty member — and former U.S. poet laureate — Robert Hass for a lunchtime poetry reading. That’s exactly what Hass offers once a month throughout the academic year with his Lunch Poems series. Although Hass usually only hosts one author per reading, this year’s series will be kicking off with a several distinguished faculty members reading their favorite poems. The group includes readers such as eco-feminist philosopher Carolyn Merchant of the Environmental Science, Policy, & Management department, and the Bioengineering department’s Kimmen Sjölander. The rest of the season will host a similarly wide range of poets including Robin Robertson, Gillian Conoley, Joshua Weiner, Harmony Holiday, and Jane Hirshfield. Even if the names don’t sound familiar, each event is a romantic opportunity for the public to meander through Cal’s massive campus and spend an intimate, literary moment with some inspiring academics.
