Lowest Wine Markup

Neumanali

The bistro business doesn't reap high profits for its investors. With high food and labor costs, most restaurants count on their drinks -- from Diet Cokes to single-malt scotches -- to make up for the money-sucking aspects of the business. When you peruse a wine list, count on the bottle prices listed to be anywhere from 100 to 300 percent of retail. That's why Neumanali is such a great place to splurge on the vino. Not only does this restaurant-slash-wine bar serve some Hayward's best food, but the prices on its by-the-bottle wine list are only $5 more than the prices in the attached store. Co-owner Julie McKillop and manager Josh Chilcoat buy small lots of wines from all over creation to create an ever-changing, ever-intriguing wine list. The theory is that folks will love the bottle they drink with dinner so much they'll buy a few more to take home, and experience has proved them right. What that means for you is that you can find $30 bottles for which you'd normally pay $50 to $100 at another restaurant. If that doesn't encourage you to order an extra appetizer, what would?
