This week we review Vir, The Welcome Matt, Mercury Falls, & Moira Scar

Vir , Gillespie

Vir sound like the second coming of Gene Loves Jezebel, which is definitely a compliment. Between the swooping guitar riffs, the clever bass lines and the slightly rough, spaced-out vocals, Gillespie has an epic sound. Vir are classic indie rock with a slight gothic edge and hints of Primal Scream. Keep an eye on this band. (Vibraphone Records)

The Welcome Matt, Members of Sound

Members of Sound is fun and breezy, perfect for a summer day. Although it falls under the general indie rock label, there are hints of folk and country. The Welcome Matt has an easy, familiar vibe.Their music isn't derivative, it just feels comfortable and homey. Lyrics are witty and positive, and overall the whole thing feels gently uplifting. (self-released)

Mercury Falls, Quadrangle

Quadrangle is a strange album. Entirely instrumental, it has some jazz elements but overall is almost impossible to pin down to one genre. Maybe "experimental" would be the best description. The sound is open and airy and ambient — music to meditate to. (Porto Franco Records)

Moira Scar, Slink to Intensity

Moira Scar reminds one of when punk was weirder and a lot more fun. Like a demented hybrid of the New York Dolls, Sonic Youth and dark cabaret — plus some deliberately strange and provocative visuals — it's like GWAR for art school kids. "Slink to Intensity" sounds like it came off the soundtrack to an odd French animation, while "You Make Me Scream" has an almost Celtic folksy edge to it. If you're a lover of all things weird, dark, and kind of twisted, you're going to adore Moira Scar. (self-released)
