See it for the HD spectacle, not the tunes. Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) heaps layers of visual overkill on this rousing-if-bombastic version of the mega-hit stage musical. Who knows if Victor Hugo would ever recognize Hugh Jackman as hounded lower-class anti-hero Jean Valjean, or Russell Crowe as his nemesis, Inspector Javert? But the set pieces of revolution and comic skullduggery (Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the rascally Thénardiers) are riotously entertaining, and Jackman, Anne Hathaway (as luckless Fantine), Eddie Redmayne (Marius), and Samantha Barks (Éponine) all have strong singing voices. For thrilling spectacle and a surfeit of barricades, you could spend an evening at the movies far more miserably than this. Directed by Hooper. Screenplay by William Nicholson, based on work by a succession of adaptors going back to novelist Hugo.(157 min.)
