Opened nearly three years after Chris Kronner left upscale California cuisine and started slinging burgers at bars and in alleyways, KronnerBurger is the fulfillment of a long-awaited dream — an updated version of a classic American diner with enough space for the chef to buy whole steers and to dry-age and grind the beef for his burgers in-house. The Kronnerburger itself, a strong contender for best in the entire Bay Area, is grilled hot and fast over a live fire to achieve Kronner’s personal ideal: a juicy burger that’s very rare and very salty. Other diner classics, such as the French fries, cream soda, and pie by the slice, have been reinvented with flair, but also an understanding of what makes the originals so beloved. Meanwhile, weekend brunch and the less diner-y daily specials menu offer whole other worlds of decadence to explore. $$-$$$
