Young Allen Ginsberg (played by Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe) arrives as a freshman at Columbia and immediately begins his transformation into the soul-searching poetic conscience of Beat-era America – a process that includes falling in love with his troubled roommate Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) and touring the bohemian enclaves of post-WWII New York with his similarly inclined pals William Burroughs (Ben Foster, in an immaculate impersonation) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston). Neophyte director John Krokidas, working from a screenplay he wrote with Austin Bunn, makes Ginsberg’s college days as psychedelic as possible -- a kaleidoscope of sex, drugs, intellectual provocation, and old-fashioned undergrad pranks, keyed to ecstatic visuals and gorgeous sound engineering. Actor Radcliffe continues his ambitious exit from the wizard woods, with strong support by DeHaan, Foster, Huston, and Michael C. Hall as the odd man out. Something to howl about (100 min.).
