Radical Reinvention: An Unlikely Return to the Catholic Church is about a progressive, punk-rock, proudly lapsed Catholic who, in midlife, finds her way back to the church -- in spite of herself and in the face of her own misgivings about the Vatican and its politics. Suffice it to say this isn't your standard religion memoir. So it's fitting that when author Kaya Oakes -- cofounder of the dearly departed magazine Kitchen Sink and currently a lecturer at UC Berkeley -- comes to Moe's Books (2476 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley) on Wednesday, July 11, it'll be a rather heretical version of the standard-issue, inside-voices author reading. Namely, she'll be backed by Conspiracy of Beards, a thirty-member a capella group that traffics entirely in Leonard Cohen songs.
