Jesmyn Ward

When: Tue., Oct. 8, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $12 general admission, $8 for students
On the surface, the trajectory of Jesmyn Ward’s life — escaping from poverty into a world of education and prestige — doesn’t sound entirely unique. But in her new memoir, Men We Reaped, Ward tells stories of a journey that’s far from finished. The book centers on the deaths of five men in her life in the span of four short years, exploring the racial and economic reasons why their lives were cut short, and how their deaths deeply affected her. In partnership with Berkeley Arts and Letters and A Great Good Place for Books, Ward will be at The Hillside Club (2286 Cedar St., Berkeley) this week, discussing her memoir and the everlasting impact of the dead on the living.
