Jamaican Queens

When: Sun., May 12, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $7

If you're tired of hearing about the next garage rock band out of the Bay Area, or the new electronic act from Brooklyn, or the hot punk band from Los Angeles, there's always Detroit's Jamaican Queens, whose sound falls under the mysterious yet somehow appropriate style of "trap pop." Buried in these songs are hints of Gucci Mane-inspired beats (a snare that screams "Dirty South"), Animal Collective's frenetic harmonizing, British phenomenon Alt-J's bombastic vocal stylings, and even some Dirty Projectors-esque experimental song dynamics. Those thirsty for unabashed -- and totally effective -- genre-blurring out of one of music's more underrated American cities should catch Jamaican Queens when it plays with Black Jeans and Maus Haus at Brick and Mortar Music Hall (1710 Mission St., San Francisco) on Sunday, May 12. 9 p.m., $7.
