Jacob Needleman

When: Thu., Sept. 27, 7 & 9 p.m. 2012

When Jacob Needleman's childhood friend became terminally ill, both young boys began to question the world, their place in it, and the meaning of life. Needleman, now a professor of philosophy at San Francisco State University known for his musings on God, love, religion, and the American soul, shares his thoughts on our relationship with the Earth -- in his view, one of the most important relationships in our lives -- in An Unknown World: Notes on the Meaning of the Earth. On Thursday, Sept. 27, at Books Inc., (1760 Fourth St., Berkeley). 7 p.m., free. 510-525-7777 or BooksInc.net
