Jackie O-Motherfucker

When: Fri., June 14, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $7

Experimental music is perhaps best experienced live. The unusual, repetitive, and, at times, discordant sounds often give way to a deeper feeling that a recording can't always provide. That will probably be the case when Oakland duo Date Palms plays The Night Light (311 Broadway, Oakland) in celebration of its third album, The Dusted Sessions, which was released June 11 on Thrill Jockey. The seven tracks slowly bore into your consciousness; they're as vast and mysterious as the desert landscape from which the band drew its inspiration: meditative, instrumental compositions that explore the far reaches of gloomy folk, new-age jazz, and Indian classical. Composed of Gregg Kowalsky on keyboard and Marielle Jakobsons on violin and flute (who both tinker with a bunch of electronics), the duo expanded its lineup to include an electric bass, tamboura, and electric guitar for this release. Seattle alt-weekly The Stranger recently proclaimed Date Palms "one of America's greatest bands." Be sure to stick around for the headliner, Sixties-inspired avant-garde outfit Jackie-O Motherfucker, which has had up to twenty rotating members in Portland, New York, and Baltimore since it formed in 1994. With Soft Shells and Lady Freemountain.
