Ancient fairy tale catches Lord of the Rings fever, with a touch of Terry Gilliam and
The Princess Bride thrown in. Director Bryan Singer achieves mixed results with a pretty princess (Eleanor Tomlinson), a stalwart peasant lad (Nicholas Hoult), an evil usurper (hammy Stanley Tucci), a noble knight (Ewan McGregor), a worried king (Ian McShane), and a mess of ugly CGI giants. Singer and his writing crew have a nice climax opportunity at the 75-minute mark, but continue on for 35 minutes of castle-bashing and monster-splattering instead. Surprisingly enough, it’s not entirely stupid. Darren Lemke and David Dobkin wrote the story, then helped Christopher McQuarrie write the screenplay. Oh, one other more movie reference we forgot: André Øvredal’s
Trollhunter. (115 min.)
