Iris and Her Girls

When: May 14-18, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $20

It may sound like the name of a burlesque act, but Iris and Her Girls is actually a play about Greek gods in a senior center, which was going to be my second guess. In this world premiere comedy by Oakland playwright/director James Keller, author of Senior Moments and Gang of Grandmothers, four elderly women are miffed that their much younger classics teacher has died until they get a load of the substitute teacher: Iris, goddess of the rainbow and messenger of the gods of Olympus. There's also a hostage situation instigated by armed codger Orestes Clay and some lessons to be learned. May 14 through May 18 at BerkeleyCity Club (2315 Durant Ave., Berkeley).PoorPlayers.org or 510-663-5767.
