Holly Brown

When: Tue., July 8, 7 p.m. 2014
The premise sounds uncannily like a tawdry episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, at least from the outset: When fourteen-year-old Marley goes missing and a resources-strapped police department fails to find her, her desperate parents turn to social media to get their daughter back — and expose themselves to the perils of the privacy-free, social-media saturated life their daughter was living. It’s in that last bit that Don’t Try to Find Me moves beyond the missing-girl trope popularized by books such as Reconstructing Amelia and last year’s runaway (pun intended!) bestseller Gone Girl — and into the realm of something weightier and thinkier, a haunting interrogation of what it means to live — and, more pertinently, how to hide — in a networked world. Catch Brown at A Great Good Place for Books (6120 La Salle Ave., Oakland) this week.
