Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely guy lost in the near future, when all anybody in similar circumstances has to do is keystroke in a new best friend. His is an OS-1 named Samantha (voice of Scarlet Johansson), and their relationship is the cold, cold heart of this sad little fable by writer-director Spike Jonze. Not very satisfying, not especially nourishing, and a fine supporting cast is squandered in Theodore’s dilemma: Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pratt, Bill Hader, Portia Doubleday, et al. The upshot is that in the future there are a million ways to get your feelings hurt. Here in the present one sure way is to watch this film (126 min.).
