Like Daniel Patterson’s other Oakland outpost, Plum (now Plum Bar), Haven has spent the last couple of years tweaking its identity. Mainly, it has gotten more casual. As before, the focus is on high-end, modern California cuisine — playful reinterpretations of, say, an heirloom tomato salad or a roasted chicken. But the restaurant is now also the kind of place where you can sit at the bar and order a burger. There’s a “bites” menu that features snackier items such as chicken wings and pâté. The burger, with its chin-dribblingly juicy beef patty and buttery sesame-and-poppy seed bun, is fancy, but not too fancy. And for those looking for the elaborate, multi-component dishes that the Haven of old was known for, even seemingly simple entrées such as roast chicken salad and Parisian-style gnocchi blend comfort food flavors and the kind of complicated cooking processes that few home cooks would attempt.
